Mormon and Moroni

Mormon was the name of the alleged ancient “compiler” of the Book of Mormon, whose son Moroni hid the document, written on golden plates, in the ground near where Joseph Smith Jr lived in the 1800s. Moroni was the last of an alleged race of people called the Nephites, whose history is described in the Book of Mormon. Although Moroni was originally a human, Smith explained that Moroni visited him in the forum of an angel, to show him where the plates were and give him his commission to restore “true Christianity” to the Earth. The golden figure at the top of each section of this Mormon profile on the Field Guide is the standard portrayal of Moroni in Mormon culture. A statue of the trumpet-blowing figure appears on the top of many Mormon temples. He is believed by many Mormons to be the angel referred to in Revelation 14:6
